Missen i "Love Actually"

Episode 1208 - Hugh Grant

Hugh Grant thinks he's only getting better as an actor now. The work he's done for the past few years feels real to him, as opposed to felling like he was faking it when he made all those romantic comedies. Hugh and Marc talk about that realization and what happened in his life to make him finally feel less insecure as an actor. They also discuss his early comedy troupe, his recent habit of playing scoundrels and villains, and his mission to push back against the violating behavior of the British tabloids. Hugh Grant

The castaway in Desert Island Discs this week is the actor Hugh Grant. The star of the enormously successful Four Weddings and a Funeral, he'll be talking to Sue Lawley about his life before he was propelled into international celebrity status. Now firmly established as a cinematic symbol of a certain type of Englishman, he had his first big break in the Merchant Ivory film Maurice, after stints in repertory at Nottingham, writing commercials and filming what he calls Europuddings in Spain, where he met his girlfriend Elizabeth Hurley.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs] Favourite track: Something Stupid by Frank & Nancy Sinatra Book: King Ottokar's Sceptre (The Adventures of Tin Tin) by Herge Luxury: Supply of handkerchiefs

Hugh Grant

Throughout his over 30 years in the biz, Hugh Grant has evolved through different phases, defining an era of romantic comedies before subverting expectations with the character-driven parts he’s always preferred. “I’d much rather have a silly voice, a funny haircut, and a funny walk,” he says, revealing the intricacies of his character-building process and how it’s changed since his 1990s Hollywood breakthrough. In particular, Hugh advises listeners on how to make each take fresh and believable: “On film, you have to mean it.” A London native and Oxford student, Hugh dabbled in writing and performing sketch comedy before giving acting a go on stages all over England. After film and TV work, including an award-winning turn in “Maurice,” he auditioned for and booked “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” which became the highest-grossing British movie in history and earned Hugh a Golden Globe Award. His streak as a romantic lead continued with “Sense and Sensibility,” “Notting Hill,” “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” “About a Boy,” “Two Weeks Notice,” “Love Actually,” “Music & Lyrics,” and more. Returning to the industry after a politically active hiatus, Hugh earned acclaim for work in “Florence Foster Jenkins,” “Paddington 2,” and the Emmy-nominated “A Very English Scandal.” This year he pivots again, in Guy Ritchie’s film “The Gentlemen” and David E. Kelley’s HBO limited series opposite Nicole Kidman, “The Undoing.” Listen to our interview above, and click to read his 2018 Backstage cover story here: https://bit.ly/3qFGsT7 --- Backstage has been the #1 resource for actors and talent-seekers for 60 years. 91: Episode 91: Hugh Grant

We all know Hugh Grant, from his floppy haired romantic performances, dad dancing down the stairs at No 10 Downing Street and most recently high kicking his was in pink prison Lycra in Paddington 2.   There is much more than meets the eye with Hugh, particularly when it comes to music and specifically in projects he’s involved in as a producer. He very clearly appreciates and understands the power of music, both for him as an actor but also in how it should be carefully crafted into a film. Currently starring in the BBC Drama A Very English Scandal as the British Liberal Party leader, Jeremy Thorpe, who in 1979 was accused of the attempted murder of his gay ex-lover. It is directed by the award winning Stephen Frears and written by the fabulous Russell T Davis who brought on board his regular collaborator, composer Murray Gold. In this episode you will hear Murrays work for the show along with some familiar pieces of music from Hughs back catalogue. Not least the memorable work done by Badly Drawn Boy for About A Boy.

Hugh Grant: Sex on the Sunset Strip, Assault with a Non-Deadly Weapon, and Cracking Open

Hugh Grant infamously almost tanked his budding movie career when he was caught with a sex worker on the Sunset Strip. He was arrested a second time when he assaulted paparazzi outside his house…with a Tupperware container full of baked beans. But perhaps most shocking of all, he wore a wire to interview a tabloid reporter and wound up cracking open a phone-hacking case that implicated both the London police and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
