Kvarten väntar – efter Gakpos show

Nederländerna är klara för kvartsfinal i fotbolls-EM efter att ha slagit ut en av mästerskapets stora skrällar, Rumänien. Och mycket av det kan de tacka Cody Gakpo för. Yttern, till vardags i Liverpool, stod för en riktigt vass match och var inblandad i det mesta i offensiv väg för sitt Nederländerna. Upp i skytteligaledning 25-åringen tog tag i saken redan efter 20 minuter när han vek in från kanten, och tryckte dit bollen vid den första stolproten. Det är hans sjätte mästerskapsmål på bara tio EM- eller VM-matcher totalt. Ett mål som inte kom som en chock för en av lagläkarna, enligt Gakpo. Han sade redan i går kväll till mig: "Du kommer göra det första målet". Då svarade jag bara: Om jag gör det, så springer jag ut till dig, vilket jag gjorde, säger Gakpo enligt AFP. Målet innebar inte bara att Nederländerna tog ledningen i matchen, utan även att han kliver upp i delad skytteligaledning i EM på tre mål. Även Georges Mikautadze (Georgien), Jamal Musiala (Tyskland) och Ivan Schranz (Slovakien) har stått för tre fullträffar hittills. Låg bakom allt Gakpo fortsatte att skapa chans efter chans. Var det inte han själv som avslutade, så hade han spelat fram. Liverpoolyttern hade också ytterligare en boll i nät, men efter VAR-koll dömdes målet bort för offside. Lite senare, i den 83:e matchminuten, drev Gakpo in från kanten på nytt och frispelade Donyell Malen som kunde rulla in 2–0 från nära håll. Malen blev sedan tvåmålsskytt efter att ha fastställt slutresultatet till 3–0 på tilläggstid. Efter den senaste matchen (2–3-förlust mot Österrike) behövde vi en reaktion och i dag tycker jag att vi tog ett steg i rätt riktning, säger Gakpo. Därmed är Rumänien, som chockartat vann sin grupp före Belgien, Slovakien och Ukraina, utslaget. I kvartsfinal väntar vinnaren i den sista åttondelsfinalen mellan Österrike och Turkiet. Den spelas senare under tisdagskvällen och startar 21.00.
