Lundh: Bara en dåre kan tro på guld för England

”Jag tror inte på sagor men jag tror verkligen på drömmar och vi har haft stora drömmar. Även om vi tagit oss vidare med sena mål och straffar innebär det inte att det är vår tur. Vi måste på egen hand se till att det händer”. Orden var Gareth Southgates när en tysk journalist drog upp att det kunde vara ödet som öppnar för England. Tyskland vann ju EM i England för 28 år sedan då Southgate var med. Klart att oket från 1966 hänger över det engelska landslaget. VM-guldet som är Englands enda titel och dessutom vunnet under lite tveksamma former sett till det avgörande målet. Under närmare 60 år har det guldet förföljt landet som anser sig vara fotbollens hemland, och i dag delvis är det för att man via Premier League har den mest populära och rikaste ligan i världen som lockar alla. Signalerade ett lugn och en tro Englands förbundskapten Southgate hade sällskap av Harry Kane på den sista presskonferensen inför en match under EM i Tyskland. De satt inför ett enormt pressuppbåd i Berlins Olympiastadion och signalerade ett lugn och en tro. Även om Kane mest talar i klyschor hanterade han allt från att han aldrig vunnit något med ett lag till tunga landslagsförluster med England och hur överlägset Spanien varit under EM. Än kallare var Gareth Southgate. För några veckor sedan var han en av Englands mest ifrågasatta män och som fick se de egna supportrarna kasta öl på honom. Han har varit med om upp och nergångar i karriären, och han drog på smilbanden apropå straffläggningen mot Tyskland i EM 1996, då just Southgate var den ende som missade. ”Jag var väl den populäraste engelsmannen i Berlin då”. Under sin tid som förbundskapten har han värdigt hanterat alla kriser och allt ifrågasättande. Inte heller har han åkt i väg i någon hybris i samband med succén i VM 2018 och hemma-EM. Han poängterade på presskonferensen att det finns så mycket annat i livet som är viktigare än fotboll och eventuella resultat kommer inte påverka hur han ser på sig själv. Snarare är det hans erfarenhet av att ha ”upplevt allt” som spelare och ledare som gör att han känner noll rädsla inför finalen. Det kan man inte ta ifrån honom Gareth Southgates viktigaste budskap till spelarna är att inte vara rädda. Då har de större chans att faktiskt vinna. Många är kritiska till hur Southgate är som tränare om man tänker på taktik och matchcoachning, men det går inte att ta i från honom den utveckling han tagit med Englands herrar på. Efter VM-guldet 1966 har man som bäst en fjärdeplats 1990 i VM och ett EM-brons 1968 och en EM-semifinal 1996 fram till 2016. Under Southgates åtta år har man blivit VM-fyra 2018, EM-tvåa 2021, åkt i VM-kvartsfinal 2022 och tagit sig till en EM-final 2024. En stor del av hans arbete har handlat om det mentala, att få spelarna att klara av trycket som följer med in på kroppen när man drar på sig Englands tröja. Bara jobbet med straffläggningar där man vänt en tydligt negativ statistik till att ha vunnit tre av de senaste fyra omgångarna. Är allt det förgäves om man förlorar mot Spanien? Nej, det är klart att det inte är. Givetvis kommer kritiker och belackare att peka på det tomma prisskåpet men England har tagit medalj i tre av de fyra senaste mästerskapen och oavsett om Southgate fortsätter eller om någon annan tar över talar de många talangerna för att England kan vara med och hugga om medaljerna framöver också. Vilket faktiskt bara skett i undantagsfall pre-Southgate. Finns det något i att de två förbundskaptenerna i finallagen bägge jobbade med yngre landslag och hade jobbat i förbundet under ett tag? Southgate basade för U21-landslaget under fyra år fram till att han tvingades hoppa in när Sam Allardyce föll på eget grepp någon månad in i jobbet. John Stones, Harry Kane, Jordan Pickford och en del andra spelare har följt med Southgate från U21-landslaget och upp i A-landslaget och därefter varit givna. Hans landslag gjort avtryck under EM Spaniens Luis de la Fuente gjorde 350 ligamatcher i både första- och andraligan innan han satsade på en tränarkarriär som tog honom till en del akademier och huvudtränarjobb utan större avtryck. För över tio år sedan blev det jobb med yngre landslag för det spanska förbundet och han ledde U19 till EM-guld 2015 och U21 till EM-guld 2019 samt tog hem OS-silver i Tokyo 2021 efter 2-1 förlust mot Brasilien. Många av dagens spelare har jobbat med de la Fuente. Efter att Luis Enrique klev av när VM i Qatar tog slut i åttondelen gick förbundet på de la Fuente som fick en tuff start med en förlust mot Skottland i EM-kvalet några månader senare. Men det kom bättre tider och för ett år sedan vann han Nations League och det spanska förbundet kan knappast ha ångrat sig när man gick på en riktig doldis. Även om inte många av de högsta höjdarna är kvar efter utfallet från Luis Rubiales tvångskyss av Jenni Hermoso efter det spanska VM-guldet för mindre än ett år sedan, har de la Fuente och hans landslag gjort avtryck under EM. Laget har vunnit alla sex matcher fram till nu, även om det krävdes förlängning mot Tyskland. Och Luis de la Fuente har utvecklat spelat, gjort det rakare och direktare. Hittat en bra balans mellan försvar och anfall, ungt och gammalt och bollinnehav kontra attack. Hur man än vänder och vrider på siffrorna är Spanien överlägset i EM. Mål, målchanser, svit av matcher utan förlust, straffläggningar. Detta är ett EM-guld för Spanien att förlora Bara det att spanska lag och landslag varit i 26 finaler på 2000-talet och enda förlusterna är när klubblag förlorat mot andra spanska lag. Man kan peka på att de släpper till fler skott än de andra lagen som gick långt och att där ligger Englands möjlighet. Eller att man vid en eventuell ledning backar hem, som mot Tyskland, och det gav tyskarna en möjlighet. Försvaret är starkt, men hur starkt? Fast i en match kan allt hända, eller? Det var åtminstone det Harry Kane drog fram bland alla klyschor. Det är givetvis korrekt, men hur jag än skruvar på förutsättningarna är detta ett EM-guld för Spanien att förlora. Bara en dåre kan på allvar tro på att England tar ett historiskt EM-guld i kväll, men ibland har även dårar rätt.
