Luke Donald: The mastermind behind Europe’s Ryder Cup triumph with Paul McGinley and Sam Torrance (E216)

This is an open discussion about leadership, creating culture and what makes a winning team.To mark the 2023 Ryder Cup in Italy, Jake and Damian host a roundtable discussion with current European captain, Luke Donald, and legends, Paul McGinley and Sam Torrance. As Team Europe Ryder Cup captains past and present, they offer a unique perspective on leadership, team culture, and the winning formula that defines this prestigious event. They debate what makes a good Ryder Cup captain and the ways they get the best attributes from their players.Luke Donald shares his experiences under different captains and how this has now influenced the way he interacts with his players. He shares his key lessons from his first 13 months as captain, including battling imposter syndrome. Paul McGinley and Sam Torrance consider how they change the way they create a sense of comradery in the current digital age, in contrast to team meetings taking place in their captain’s bedroom back in 2004.Paul and Sam reflect on their choice to not include Luke in their 2014 team. They share what went into this decision and what elements need to come together to create a winning team. This Ryder Cup roundtable is a deep dive into the art of cultivating an open and communicative team, finding the delicate balance between talent and performing under pressure, and defining the legacy that extends beyond the competition itself. Ryder Cup Review

The podcast has taken a break for a week but it's back for a full Ryder Cup review. Josh is joined by Tim Barter and, deputy editor at Bunkered, Michael McEwan for an in depth look back at Rome. Plenty of great stories, insights and reflections on Europe's victory.

Lessons from the Month with Will Still, Steve Hansen David Smith MBE and legends of the Ryder Cup

In September Jake and Damian chatted to a number of sports guests, but the conversations were far from sport centred. Each guest offered great learnings from their lives, including creating culture, what makes a great leader and how to be more present everyday. They reflect on the conversation they had with Ryder Cup legends Luke Donald, Sam Torrance and Paul McGinley about their leadership styles and why Paul and Sam didn’t pick Luke to be in their team in 2014. Jake and Damian discuss Will Still’s open and authentic leadership style. Jake and Damian had an honest and emotional conversation with Steve Hansen, the previous All Blacks' coach, on the hidden cost of high performance. Another vulnerable discussion was had with Paralympian David Smith MBE, who is currently dealing with the effects of a rare and invasive tumour. With David they consider the true importance of life. The conversations that took place this month were reminders to take a pause and try to stay present. EP25: Luke Donald and the Oestrogen Mice

This week’s pod comes from Troon, Oxfordshire, Dubai and Florida, with all the wifi lags that such a thing entails. But it’s worth it as Iain, Eddie and Andrew are joined by Luke Donald who gives an insight into the effort and detail behind the scenes at the Ryder Cup and ponders the possibility of another captaincy. Eddie petitions hard for a menial role at Bethpage and petitions even harder for a bone broth sponsorship. TGL is given some detailed analysis, although Iain is denied a chance to show his knowledge of the original Boston Common as Andrew talks about Giant Haystacks instead. We also find out from whom Eddie might have inherited his dishonest ways. EXCLUSIVE NordVPN Deal ➼ https://nordvpn.com/chipping Try it risk-free now with a 30-day money-back guarantee! Once again defeated by really quite basic technology, Andrew and Iain end up sharing one microphone in Rome as well as sharing further thoughts on the upcoming Ryder Cup. Eddie returns to offer some insight into potential pairings and offers an 'insight' into the mentality of the French - neither of which may be correct. The trio also reflect on Brookline 99, debate which national foodstuff you would prefer to be armed with and reveal the true weight of Jon Rahm. Learn more about your ad choices. Ryder Cup: Rory and Cantlay DRAMA on and off the course, but Europe on the brink of victory ft. Peter Finch

What a day! Europe need just 4 points to win the Ryder Cup after a dramatic day two in Rome, but that doesn’t tell half the story.   As rumours of a rift in the US camp filtered around the course, Patrick Cantlay’s cap was the main talking point for most of the day, but his two late birdies made for a tense finale, before video footage emerged of an angry Rory McIlroy in the carpark.   To digest it all, Beef is joined by BGC member Peter Finch who makes some bold predictions about how Sunday will unfold, and we get a US perspective from Rick from The First Cut podcast.   Beef's Golf Club will be back with a review episode on Sunday, so give us a follow to keep up with all the latest Ryder Cup action.   We have brand new Beef's Golf Club x Puma merch available: https://crowdnetwork.co.uk/podcasts/beefs-golf-club/   If you are listening on Apple, and would like to listen to this episode ad-free as well as getting access to Crowd's other sports shows, click here: https://apple.co/3zQpfwE. You can also listen ad-free on Amazon music.   For more content, follow us on social media @beefsgolfclub, and to get in touch, email beef@crowdnetwork.co.uk   You can also join our Facebook group and get involved with our community of listeners, chatting all things golf and podcast.   Music courtesy of BMG Production Music Learn more about your ad choices.
