Dömdes för rånmord Hakamada dömdes till döden för att ha rånmördat sin egen chef och dennes familj 1966, men friades för en månad sedan efter att en en japansk domstol prövat fallet på nytt – 58 år efter att han först greps. Hakamada hade då varit på fri fot i tio år, sedan en domstol beslutat att rättegången skulle tas om, eftersom nya bevis framkommit. Genom åren har utredningen och Japans rättssystem kritiserats för att fabricera bevis, tvinga fram erkännanden och hålla misstänkta gisslan. Japan är utöver USA den enda stora industrialiserade demokratin som fortfarande håller fast vid dödsstraffet som rättslig påföljd – ett straff med stor uppbackning hos befolkningen.
