Columbus skriver inte ut någon dödsorsak, men konstaterar att även Johnny Gaudreaus bror Matthew omkommit. "Columbus Blue Jackets är i chock och förkrossat av den här ofattbara tragedin", skriver NHL-klubben på X. Johnny Gaudreau blev en av NHL:s största stjärnor under sina dryga åtta säsonger i Calgary Flames. Han fick smeknamnet "Johnny Hockey" och gick in och varumärkesskyddade sitt smeknamn. Han öste in poäng i Calgary och hade sin bästa säsong 2021–22 när han gjorde 115 poäng, 40 mål och 75 assist. Men han överraskade hockeyvärlden genom att flytta till bottenlaget Columbus som han representerat de två senaste säsongerna. Anledningen till flytten var att han ville komma närmare sin familj i New Jersey. Totalt gjorde han 743 poäng (243 mål och 500 assist) på 763 NHL-matcher under sin karriär. Den 31-årige amerikanen togs ut till NHL:s All star-match vid sju tillfällen och prisades 2017 med Lady Byng Trophy, NHL:s pris till den sportsligaste spelaren. Han vann JVM-guld med USA 2013 och tog VM-brons 2018. Han spelade VM för USA så sent som i somras i Tjeckien. Hans bror Matthew Gaudreau var också hockeyspelare, men nådde aldrig NHL. Han gjorde tolv matcher för Tyringe i hockeyettan under pandemisäsongen 2020–21.

LAS VEGAS. Årets NHL Awards blev ingen svensk klang- och jubelföreställning likt fjolårets. Då vann Linus Ullmark priset som NHL:s bäste målvakt och fick ta emot Vezina Trophy i Nashville. Erik Karlsson korades till ligans bäste back och fick lyfta med Norris Trophy. Mikael Backlund fick också gå upp på scenen och ta emot ett pris, King Clancy Trophy, för sitt ledarskap i Calgary Flames. Under torsdagens gala här i Las Vegas fick vi nöja oss med att Filip Forsberg blev uttagen i NHL Second All Star Team.
